Feel the Earth Move in Anderson County by Eric Keller

Do you feel it?  Here- let me show you why?

“This is a tidal wave,” said David Wasserman, an analyst who tracks U.S. House races for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. “It’s hard to look at tonight’s results and to conclude anything other than that Democrats are the current favorite for control of the House in 2018.”
— Washington Post

Let me provide the context of that quote.  Virginia trounced the Republican Party in all ways.  Before last night, Republicans controlled 60 out of 100 State House representatives.  This morning, the best they can hope for (if the very tight races that require hand counting are maintained) is a 50-50 tie.  They lost Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General.

Trump supported the Republican candidate for Governor and then cut him loose after he lost.  Trumpism denies any reality that shows the inherent weakness of that movement- Americans do not like racist and nationalistic jingoism.  What is left of the Republican Party might like it- but that is all.

Here in Anderson County, Republicans will say, "That is Virginia and not Tennessee." and they will be right.  But our friend, reality, always gets the last vote.  East Tennessee is not Deep South and never has been.  Most were pro-Union in Civil War and that means mountain folk think differently than the Deep South.  Democrats lost the State House in 2012 by 700 votes...five years ago.  More than 12,000 voters went blue that year.  Only two elections, 2014 and 2016 had strong Republican presence.  Trump killed that.

The earth moved.  It will continue to do so.  Terry Frank, John Ragan, and Chuck Fleischmann all felt it.  Democrats are rising.  Slowly- but steadily.
